A new backpack, binders, pencils, and a calculator – the list adds up fast. For parents already stretched thin by rising food costs, rent, and energy bills, back-to-school season is one more financial pressure point they didn’t budget for.
Every year, United Way Northumberland fills backpacks with age-appropriate essential school supplies for students from JK/SK to Grade 12, ages 4 to 17. No child should walk into September without the tools they need to learn, grow, and belong.

That’s where Backpacks for Kids comes in. Every summer, United Way Northumberland fills backpacks with age-appropriate school supplies for students from JK/SK through to Grade 12. Each backpack costs between $25 and $80 to fill depending on the child’s age, but what’s inside represents something much bigger: confidence, dignity, and a real shot at a strong start.
In 2025, 850 children across Northumberland County received a backpack, and the need stretched across every stage of a child’s education.
