Rooted in the history of United Way at Work campaigns, Day of Caring reflects decades of collaboration between local workplaces and community partners who believe in taking action beyond the office walls. From there, volunteer teams head out to help with gardening, yard work, painting, and small indoor projects like organizing garages and storage spaces — offering hands-on support to both neighbours and community organizations.

Day of Caring begins with a community breakfast made possible through the longstanding partnership between United Way Northumberland and the Cobourg Lions Centre, where volunteers gather before heading out to project sites across the county.

“Day of Caring is one of the most heartwarming ways we see community come together,” said Alicia Vandine, Executive Director of United Way Northumberland. “We are so proud to bring this program back for its 27th year. Working alongside our United Way at Work partners and community volunteers allows us to roll up our sleeves and provide meaningful support to nonprofits and to seniors who want to remain safe and comfortable in their homes. When seniors feel supported where they live, it’s a win for everyone.”

United Way Northumberland is now accepting applications for Day of Caring support, with a special focus on helping seniors remain safe and supported in their homes. With the rising cost of living and senior poverty becoming one of the fastest-growing needs in our community, small acts of practical support — like yard work, painting, and light home projects — can make a meaningful difference. Nonprofits, charities, community groups, and residents who could benefit from this assistance are encouraged to apply.

This initiative reflects United Way Northumberland’s mission to strengthen local communities by mobilizing care, compassion, and practical help where it is needed most.

Applications are now open. To apply or learn more, visit www.mynuw.org and follow Day of Caring link.
