Each year, as students prepare for their return to the classroom, Northumberland United Way is working hard to provide backpacks full of school supplies to children and families in our community. This year, we’re preparing 1,000 backpacks for students, JK to Grade 12.
“The start of a new school year is an exciting time for many students and parents, however, if you’re living in low income or unemployed, it can lead to extra stress and worry,” says Dianne Turk, Director of Resource Development, Northumberland United Way. “I’m proud to be a part of this program that has supported more than 17,000 students since 2005.”
Thank you to this year’s Backpack for Kids sponsors: Staples Cobourg, Cameco, Northumberland County Community and Social Services, and the Cobourg Lion’s.
Do you require a backpack for your child? You can register by completing the form at: https://www.mynuw.org/back-packs-for-kids/. Once registered, you will be contacted by Northumberland United Way with the available pick-up date.
In the past, this program relied on the support of more than 50 volunteers and sponsors to sort and stuff backpacks over two full days at the Cobourg Lion’s Community Centre. Now, because of the pandemic, sorting and stuffing is completed solely by United Way staff and board members.
