January 25, 2021 – This holiday season, Nurturing Health Naturopathic Clinic and Nourish Boutique Spa joined together to host the first collection drive for Period Promise Northumberland.
A local partnership between Northumberland United Way and Thrive: Northumberland Coalition to End Violence Against Women, Period Promise Northumberland aims to address the issue of period poverty in our community while increasing access to product for anyone who experiences a period.
“We are overwhelmed by the success of Nurturing Health Naturopathic Clinic and Nourish Boutique Spa’s holiday collection drive and the incredible support of our local community,” says Bobbie Dawson, Executive Director, Northumberland United Way. “The leadership shown by these local businesses and the support we have received from residents in our community has been absolutely awe-inspiring. It proves the importance of this work locally and what we can accomplish when we work together towards a common goal.”
Periods are a fact of life and so is the need for menstrual products. Sadly, many people cannot afford them. Almost one-quarter of Canadian women say they have struggled to afford menstrual products for themselves or their children (Plan International, Period Stigma Report, 2018).
“As quickly as we received the donations, we immediately began to distribute the products back into our community,” says Nicole Beatty, Project Consultant, Thrive Northumberland. “Most recently, Northumberland County’s daytime and evening warming rooms received products to support those currently experiencing homelessness.”
Period Promise Northumberland believes that no one should have to choose between buying groceries to feed their family and being able to afford basic hygiene products. Although for many people, this is a reality.
With the support of local business partners such as Nurturing Health Naturopathic Clinic and Nourish Boutique Spa as well as the support of our dedicated Community Action Group, Period Promise Northumberland is working to make fundamental change to eradicate period poverty in our community.
