As we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, it’s crucial to acknowledge the challenges that racial discrimination imposes on both individuals and communities. Racial discrimination often results in limited access to essential services, perpetuates economic disparities, and hinders social progress. At United Way Northumberland, we are committed to breaking down these barriers and creating a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
In Northumberland County, the visible minority population stands at 4.5% as of 2021 (and rising). Recognizing the unique needs of these community members, we collaborate with local organizations and initiatives to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities. Here’s how our programs are making a difference:
Backpacks for Kids: Supporting children and families through agencies such as the New Canadians Centre, our backpacks program ensures that children from all backgrounds have the tools they need for academic success. By providing backpacks filled with school supplies, we’re fostering inclusivity and supporting families as they adjust to new surroundings.
211: This free, confidential support line is available in 150 languages, offering critical connections to community services for individuals facing barriers, including language and cultural challenges. Whether it’s access to housing, mental health support, or employment resources, 211 is a lifeline for those in need.
Period Promise: Period poverty disproportionately affects marginalized women and girls, creating additional barriers to education and employment. Through this initiative, we provide menstrual hygiene products to those in need, ensuring dignity and equity for all.
Collaborative Partnerships: We work closely with local agencies, nonprofits, and charities to address systemic inequities and support individuals and families struggling with the impacts of racial discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion.
United Way Northumberland is committed to creating an environment where every individual feels valued and supported. We invite our community members, partners, and stakeholders to join us in this vital work. Through collective action, we can eliminate racial discrimination and ensure that Northumberland County remains a place of opportunity and growth for all.
None of this would be possible without your support. We’re all in this together, and with your generosity, we’re leading the charge toward a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate community. Thank you for standing with us.
We acknowledge that United Way Northumberland is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishnabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), Ojibway/Chippewa peoples. As settlers, we’re grateful for the opportunity to live and work on this land and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land – for thousands of years.
