Communities across Ontario have always demonstrated their strength by standing together during times of need. In response to the devastating wildfires impacting communities across Northwestern Ontario, United Way Northumberland is proud to stand with our neighbours in Northern Ontario and help connect our community members, donors, and partners with a trusted and coordinated response.

 

Following a discussion with our colleagues at United Way of Thunder Bay, we are pleased to share that United Way Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay Community Foundation have partnered to establish the Northwestern Ontario Wildfire Community Support Fund. The Fund was created in response to additional offers of assistance and in consultation with the City of Thunder Bay Community Support Table, community partners, Indigenous organizations, and other local stakeholders. It is designed to support both the immediate response to the wildfire emergency and the longer-term recovery efforts that will follow.

 

Donations will help support frontline agencies and service providers responding to the needs of evacuees and affected communities, while also supporting longer-term recovery, resilience, and rebuilding efforts.

 

Funding decisions will be made jointly by United Way Thunder Bay and the Thunder Bay Community Foundation and will be informed by ongoing consultation with community partners to help ensure resources respond to evolving needs.

We know many people in our community are looking for ways to help beyond financial contributions.

 

At this time, Northumberland United Way is not accepting physical item donations for wildfire relief. We are working with our partners to support a coordinated response and will keep our community informed as additional opportunities to assist become available.

 

Together, we can demonstrate that compassion does not stop at our own borders.
