Day of Caring: 26 Years of Community Action

For more than two and a half decades, United Way Northumberland’s Day of Caring has been a powerful display of what’s possible when a community comes together — volunteers, donors, local businesses, and nonprofit partners all united in the shared goal of making life a little brighter for those who need it most.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, Day of Caring has grown into a tradition that doesn’t just transform yards or buildings — it lifts spirits, creates connections, and strengthens the fabric of our communities. Now in its 26th year, this day brings out teams from our United Way @ Work partners alongside dedicated community volunteers to tackle meaningful, hands-on projects across Cobourg, Port Hope, and nearby areas.

From seniors who wish to remain in their homes but need help with outdoor upkeep, to nonprofits and small businesses that serve others but may lack the resources for maintenance — every project we take on represents your dollars at work. Painting, weeding, trimming, mulching, small repairs, and big smiles — all made possible because you believe in the power of local change.

This year’s event takes place on Friday, June 13, beginning with a community breakfast at the Cobourg Lions Community Centre, generously hosted by the Cobourg Lions Club. After breakfast and the classic group photo, teams will roll up their sleeves and head out to their assigned locations, before returning to the Lions Centre for a well-earned lunch and celebration at 2pm.

Darlene Robertson, our new Community Connector, is experiencing her first Day of Caring today, and her enthusiasm has been infectious from day one. Her ability to connect authentically with our United Way at Work partners and her passion for expanding our impact has been the secret ingredient in making this year’s event shine. Building on 25 years of caring, Darlene’s vision extends to every corner of Northumberland County.

To our donors, sponsors, and volunteers: thank you. This day belongs to all of us, and it’s a beautiful reminder that when we care together, we create lasting change.
