As students across Northumberland County prepare for exams and the transition into second semester, many families are navigating a familiar January reality: tighter budgets, shifting routines, and new school supply needs that weren’t on the radar a few weeks ago.
Backpacks for Kids is often associated with the start of the school year, but the need for school supplies doesn’t follow a calendar. Course changes, new subjects, and unexpected life circumstances can mean a student suddenly needs binders, paper, math supplies, or a scientific calculator — items that can create real financial strain for families already living paycheque to paycheque or relying on community supports.
That’s why United Way Northumberland now offers Backpacks for Kids as a year-round program. Whether a family is settling into the community, navigating a housing transition, or adjusting after a sudden change at home, we’re here to help ensure students have what they need to stay engaged at school.
As second semester approaches, families and service providers are encouraged to reach out if school supplies are becoming a barrier. To learn more or request support, please contact our office at 905-372-6955 and speak with Erin or April.
